As we bid adieu to the controversy filled year of 2011 and welcome the most awaited, 2012, BollyCurry is here with a quick recap of this year's hottest and most hyped news pieces of the year!
10. Akon Goes Bollywood
Hollywood pop sensation, Akon, went Bollywood recently when he sang for Shahrukh's Ra.One!
The 'Konvict' even tried his hand at singing in Hindi for his song Chammak Challo.
The song went on to top the 'most downloaded songs' list within just 18 days of the song's launch!
9. To be topless, or not to be
One of the most popular controversies definitely has to be the Kajal Agrawal FHM Magazine cover!
Wondering what was so special about this cover when so many others actresses have posed shirtless before?
It's the fact that Kajal later denied posing shirtless for the magazine! The South actress claimed that she was wearing a tube top during the shoot and the magazine photoshopped the cover afterwards!
The magazine, in return, explained that there was nothing 'photoshopped' as they even had the raw photoshoot pictures as evidence!
8. Punjab and UP ban Aarakshan
The ban of Aarakshan also became a big deal when UP banned the film due to fear of protests. Apparently, the dialogues had the ability to incite public sentiments and the film also brought up the debate about reservation. UP's decision set the precedent encouraging the states of Punjab and Andhra Pradesh to do the same. These events seemed to falter the confidence of Prakash Jha at first since it was believed that the film could have made 6-7 Crores from UP itself. However, the movie went on to becoming a Box Office Hit!
7. Heroine - Ash to Kareena
Initially, Aishwariya Rai Bachchan was to play the lead role for the film until the big bubble burst - Ash was 5 months pregnant. This was a shock for not only the whole world but also the film's director Madhur Bhandharkar. The most surprising part of this news? Bhandharkar who had nearly 40 locations set to shoot the film, found out about the actress's pregnancy at the same time the rest of the world did and that too through the media! Not only did this incident delay the shooting of the movie but also caused Madhur to go into a bit of a depression for a while as he worried about the people who depended on the movie!
Kareena Kapoor stepped in for Ash as the lead actress and saved the day!
6. Ra.One, not number one?
Ra.One being Bollywood's most awaited film seemed to have disappointed many when it failed at the Box Office! The movie was even claimed to be the most expensive till date with a net worth of approximately Rs. 150 Crore!
To make matters worse, Farah Khan's beau, Shirish Kunder, decided to sprinkle some salt on King Khan's wounds! Shirish was seen tweeting on Twitter, the extremely popular social network phenomenon, about the failure of the film. If that wasn't enough, Kunder even sent out another tweet, fueling the Khan war by complimenting Salman's Bodyguard claiming other films to be "pending".
5. IIFA goes international at Toronto
Canada got a healthy dose of Bollywood during the IIFA awards that took place in Toronto, Ontario in June! The amount of tourism the city of Toronto received during the IIFA awards was a great economic boost for the city! The awards were a great success with Dabanngg taking the cake with a whopping amount of 10 awards! Performances by Aishwariya, Sonakshi, Shahrukh, Priyanka and many others left the audiences mesmerized!
4. Denial or the truth?
The recent December issue of FHM became, yet again, another popular controversy! Like Kajal, Pakistani actress Veena Malik posed nude for the magazine and then denied doing so once the cover was out! The cover stirred up quite a storm back home in Pakistan! Court cases were filed, protests were started. At one point, Malik was asked to be banned from Pakistan for life! Upon Veena's denial of shooting nude, the magazine responded by releasing another topless picture of her! The magazine even claimed to have videos of the shoot!
3. Bipasha's audio exchange
Earlier in 2006, audio-clips taped with Bipasha Basu and Samajwadi party leader Amar Singh, were barred from media. However, the Supreme Court decided to lift the ban when it was revealed that Singh had kept some facts! The audio-clips contain vulgar sexual talks between the actress and politician.
Almost instantly, Basu stepped up and refused to accept it. She claimed that the female voice was not her. The actress even used Twitter to get through to her fans and get their support.
2. Why This Kolaveri Di BollyCurry?
Directly translated, the lyric means "why this rage towards me, girl?". The song became a major hit throughout the whole world as it attracted over millions of viewers on YouTube. Originally, it is a Tamil song and was recorded for the Tamil film "3". Recently, the song won the YouTube Gold Award which is awarded to viral videos from all over the world. The song has been dubbed in Japanese, English, Gujarati, Rajasthani, Punjabi and numerous other languages by various bands, artists and even ordinary people on YouTube! Sonu Nigam's 4 year old son Nevan Nigam's "milk song" version garnered as much attention as the original!
1. Aish's Pregnancy Journey
The number one biggest news this year has been none other than the much hyped celeb pregnancy! We have all heard and read every minute detail about the Aishwariya Rai Bachchan's pregnancy! First it was Aish and Abhi's wedding, and now their first baby! The journey first started with, of course, the announcement of Aishwariya being pregnant and Heroine being delayed! Then rumors were started about Aish having undergone an IVF to produce a baby boy for the Bachchan family! Quite an ironic situation considering the result of pregnancy!
Just after the "IVF" rumor, next to follow was the story that Aishwariya was expecting twins! Many news stories included promises that "doctors had confirmed the news" but all rumors were put to rest when Aishwariya gave birth to a baby girl on November 16, 2011.
However, the media wasn't finished obsessing over the baby, and the Bachchans were definitely not ready to expose the little bundle of joy to the media! The family refused any baby pictures and allegedly even refused a Rs.5 Crore offer for a picture! The Bachchan's insistence on keeping the baby away from the media, has given the media more to feed on!
Years come and go but some controversies stay for a long, long time! And we're more than sure many of these news stories will stay fresh in our minds for a long time as well! Now, all we can hope for 2012 is a more exciting year with more exciting news!
For now, Happy New Year and why this kolaveri di BollyCurry?
