Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 28 (IANS) Malayalam superstar Mammootty is all set to essay the role of Kerala's social reformer Sree Narayana Guru in a film titled 'Yugapurushan', which will also see ace actor Mohanlal play Vivekananda.
Mammootty said the film would be moulded like a docu-fiction and aims at re-living the ideals and ideology of the great leader.
'Honestly I wasn't very keen because I felt that I just don't fit into the physical mould of the great Guru. But since the producer and others were keen that I should play it, I agreed,' Mammootty told IANS.
Sree Narayana Guru (1856-1928), or Gurudeva as he is fondly called, revolted against casteism and worked on propagating new values of freedom and social equality. He worked towards transforming society and his most popular message was 'one caste, one religion, one god for mankind'.
Asked whether he was happy playing Gurudeva, Mammootty said: 'I will be happy only after the film is released and is successful.'
The film, being directed by R. Sukumaran and produced by A.V. Anoop, has been on the anvil for the last two years and will go on floors next year.
Elaborating on the project, Mammootty said he would be playing Gurudeva's character from the age of 30 to 73.
The film follows the life of Sree Narayana Guru and also depicts his meetings with other great leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore and Vivekanada, the veteran actor said.
Another highlight of the film is that the role of Vivekananda will be played by the other Malayalam superstar Mohanlal.
'The fact that we two are acting (together) is not big news because we are slated to act together in a film to be produced for the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes. And that film may be done before 'Yugapurushan',' Mammootty said.
The two stars have acted in several films together but haven't made a joint appearance since 1996.
