Hello Everyone! We are back once again with The Buzz and this time Parvin Dabas is our guest of honor! The fabulous actor has been seen in movies like Dillagi, Monsoon Wedding, Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara, Khosla ka Ghosla, among others and even won much acclaim for the latter! He is currently happily married to Preeti Jhangiani and even has a son! He recently turned director with his 2011 with Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande and even won a bronze palm award at the 2011 mexico international film festival for it! Without further ado, here is what he had to say:
1. You have acted in around 20 movies since your debut in 1999, which movie stands out in your mind and why?
Well, most definitely Monsoon Wedding because of the spirit it was made in and the fact that it was one of my first films and such a good learning experience for me as a young actor working with people such as Naseerudin Shah and under the direction of Mira Nair. It was one of the most positive set experiences I've had and I tried to replicate it during the shooting of my own directorial debut Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande.
2. How did you and your wife, Preeti Jhangiani, meet and how did you know that she was the one?
Me and Preeti did a film together called With Luv Tumhara. We never hit it off romantically on set but stayed in touch afterwards and gradually started developing an attraction for each other. Someone like Preeti is very rare to find in this industry - someone down to earth and with a great heart.
3. April 11th this year saw you welcoming your son, how is fatherhood treating you?
Fatherhood has been treating me very well. Our son is now 7 months old and is turning out to be quite a ladykiller and I'm enjoying all the attention girls give him :)
4. You recently released your directorial debut, Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande. How did the movie come about, more so the hatke title?
Well the idea of the movie germinated in my mind because I was involved in some land acquisition protests happening in my ancestral village, Kanjhawla. What I noticed was that there were no young people involved in these protests though, only old farmers, both men and women. It's here that the idea started forming in my mind that what if some youth of the village actually developed a conscience and tried doing something about the land acquisition problems.
The title came about from a contest we were running for the title since I had none in mind. I announced a Rs. 15,000 prize and started getting a lot of suggestions from everyone. When Anupam Kher ji came on set and heard about the prize he asked me whether he could tweet about it. I said sure and we got a lot of suggestions from his twitter followers. The title which was finally chosen 'sahi dhandhe galat bande' was from one of his followers and yes, he did get the money!
5. The movie won a Bronze Palm Award at the 2010 Mexico International Film Festival, what was your reaction upon hearing the news?
Of course I was very pleased and honoured but I was even more honoured when we were chosen in the 'Indian panorama' section of the Indian international film festival of india 2011. I didn't realize how prestigious it was until a lot of filmmakers started calling me to congratulate me. I was told it was a huge honour for a first time film maker to have his film selected for it.
6. Now that you have modeled, acted, script written and directed, which role do you find the most pleasing?
I find acting the most pleasing because it's a good mix of satisfying work with not too much responsibility. In modeling though, great money is a little easy. Writing and directing are really hard and time consuming and one really needs to take out two years of one's life for one film, which is worth it if one is really excited about the film.
7. You are a trained scuba diver and an award winning photographer, do you miss swimming and taking pictures?
Yes, I do. In the last two years, I've only been able to take a short 3 day diving vacation but like I mentioned when you're writing and directing a film, then one needs to take out that much time to do full justice to it.
8. Now that Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande has made a great impact, are you thinking on directing more movies in the future?
Yes, fortunately people have liked the film a lot and believe that I can direct more films :) There are two scripts I'm working on currently. But writing is not easy, it takes time and one has to remember that a good script is one of the most important parts of a film as a strong foundation is crucial. I'm also currently acting in director Nila Madhab Panda's next film, I am Kalam.
