Film: 'Kempa'; Cast: Santhosh, Tanushika, Avinash, Prajna, Pradeep Rawat and others; Producer: Anekal Balaraj; Story-Screenplay-Direction: Jagadish Waali; Music: Guru Kiran; Lyrics: Kaviraj; Rating: **1/2
'Kempa', based on a real life incident in Gopinaththam, the birthplace of Veerappan, sparkles in a few sequences in the beginning and in the end, but rest of the film drags, thanks to predictable sequences.
Surprisingly, Jagadish turns inconsistent after a great beginning. 'Kempa' indeed had a lot of commercial elements, but suffers due to poor acting and narrative. Jagdish, however, manages to salvage the film to some extent towards the end.
The director picked up an untouched topic - dominance of Special Task Force (STF) in the areas known as brigand Veerappan's hideout.
Film's high point is cinematography. Director Jagadish has handled the camera well and have captured the shots in Gopinaththam Village in the beginning as well in the climax pretty well.
Kempa is an innocent village boy, born and brought up in Gopinaththam village, a territory of forest brigand Veerappan. His sister is raped by the STF personnel, who is engaged in Veerappan operation. Unable to get justice, an enraged Kempa kills the rapists and moves to Bangalore where he kills a gangster and becomes the don.
Here he meets Bindu. Initially Kempa ignores, but later accepts her love.
An unexpected twist leads to a happy turn of events later.
'Kempa' was touted as a perfect launching pad for Santhosh, son of producer Anekal Balaraj. But the newcomer doesn't seem ready to take up such strong roles.
However, Tanushika looks promising and and proved her mettle in the climax. Pragna too impresses as hero's sister. Avinash is repetitive. Pradeep Rawat looks menacing in the villain's role.
Guru Kiran has composed two good songs.
'Kempa' could have been a better effort, but for the poor handling in the middle of the film.
