As more and more film personalities express moral support for Sanjay Dutt, convicted for possession of arms illegally, ace Malayalam superstar Mohanlal too says the Bollywood actor should be shown leniency.
Mohanlal expressed his support through a post on Facebook Saturday. He writes that over the last 20 years, his colleague and friend Sanjay Dutt has been a reformed and good citizen, a loving family man and a person who has braved adversity, to come out stronger and better.
"He certainly deserves our compassion and help to put this chapter behind him once and for all. I sincerely hope and pray that he is shown the leniency he truly deserves and is granted a pardon," writes Mohanlal.
On Thursday last, the apex court upheld Dutt's conviction under the Arms Act for illegally possessing weapons, and sent him to five years in prison.
The popular Mumbai actor has already spent 18 months in jail.
He was earlier convicted by the TADA court for illegal possession of a 9 mm pistol and an AK-56 rifle.
Maharashtra Governor K. Sankarnarayanan, a former Kerala finance minister (and close aide of Defence Minister A.K.Antony) has vested in him, reports indicate, the power to pardon the actor. The governor is going to be under pressure to offer the 53-year-old reprieve.

I don't think it happens only in India if you have power and money you can basically do anything in this world. Whether it be India or US. The difference is in INdia everything happens opening where else other countries do it in the down low. I'm disgusted by how all the celebs are on his side so basically they are promoting violence. What happen to those days when all the celebs were against the gang rape at that time they wanted to kill those 4 guys isn't this similar? Wasn't sanjay dutt invovled with terrorists who did kill a lot of people? Bunch of rubbish I say.
God, pls stop posting this kind of articles, it's really getting on my nerves. And You guys r just encouraging bad behavior. all of these actors seem stupid they don't know the meaning of pain or stress.
No he does not deserve compassion. These people are ridiculous. Jumping on their high horse just because one BIG FAT celebrity has been found guilty and sentenced back to jail after earning money for 20 years, why would people feel sorry for him? Utter BULLSHIT.
With all respect to Mr Mohanlal! Any one who possess armament without license is crime! If a person changed or not that is not the point here! The country has laws and each and everyone should follow it! And the compassionate comment r highly unfortunate! Citizens of country should never support these kind of acts!!!
Here we go again! Another person climbs on the bandwagon!! I guess their intention is to get Sanjay Dutt to walk away Scott free! How nice it is to be a famous star!! That seems to be all that is required to evade the law and punishment for ones crimes or mistakes! Great going if you can get it I guess!
If this was any other guy, would HE have got a pardon for illegally possessing weapons? No! So this special treatment is only reserved for the rich and famous!! What a great justice system India has!
