Actor-turned-producer John Abraham, who has been in the industry for a decade now, says Bollywood award shows have been reduced to prime-time television shows and believes they can never reach the level of a fair award.
"All our award shows are television shows. Actors have to dance on those shows for television rating points. So it is a channel thing," the 40-year-old said here Wednesday at a promotional event for his film "I, Me aur Main".
Asked why is Bollywood not able to reach the level of the recently-held Oscars in Hollywood, he said: "We don't have any single award which is a serious award, so I don't think we will ever reach that level of a fair award. The actor who will dance will get the award and I think that's the way it has been happening."
However, John feels this year he has observed a change and good films have bagged awards.
"Last year all awards have been pretty fair, to be very honest, as new and different films like 'Paan Singh Tomar', 'Vicky Donor', 'OMG! Oh My God', 'English Vinglish', 'Kahaani' - they have all bagged a lot of awards. I believe we still need to make a legitimate award. I don't think we have reached that level of maturity," John said.

You're absolutely right that there isn't a legitimate award in Bollywood. But I thought the National Film Award was the closest thing to a legit film award because it takes into account regional films and not just Bollywood films. And all these awards are popularity contests anyway.
Speaking of the Oscars, some of the awards are fair and others aren't. The Oscars is decided by a handful of people and even then there are many factors involved in who gets to win. Plus, the Oscars does get boring after a while and the most important thing asides from the nominees and the wins, seems to be the fashions.

It is a popularity contest not based on talent but who is popular at the time. And the last award should always be the Best Film but it never is...it's the Best Actor.
The day SHAHRUKH KHAN stops buying awards -- I will start believing in Indian Award shows.
I have to agree with him, the award shows have pretty much reduced down to television shows and that's terrible.
The Indian audience dnt watch story of a movie. They watch who the actor is...If there is salman, shahrukh or aamir then they watch movies..without these actors the audience dont consider a movie as a movie...
Well, at least Bollywood award shows have good dance performances, Oscars had a stupidly grinning host insulting women and kids! It was unbearable! This year, the best quality Hindi movies have won awards so what is there to crib about?
