Bollywood celebrities have expressed grief and anger over the brutal gang rape of a student in the national capital that has shocked the nation.
Actress and activist Shabana Azmi termed the incident "horrific" and said it points to "a shocking state of affairs".
"What we really need to do is to use this shocking incident as a wake-up call to demand fast-track courts, speedy justice, and a process of investigation that is firm; there has to be the certainty of punishment for the accused," said Shabana.
The savage rape and torture of the 23-year-old by at least six men occurred Sunday night when the woman and her male friend boarded a private bus, used for ferrying school children, in south Delhi after watching a movie.
The victim, battling for life at the Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, was brutally assaulted in the moving bus. Her male friend, who tried to save her, was beaten up by the rapists. Both were dumped by the roadside after some 40 minutes.
The shocking incident, which has resulted in widespread street protests across the country, has had its impact in Mumbai as well.
"I can't imagine that kind of brutality," said actress Soha Ali Khan, "it makes one incredibly enraged when you think about it."
"I can't imagine what the victim and her family are going through my heart bleeds for her and I hope that she survives and that she fights and goes on to live a wonderful life. I am just praying for her well being at the moment."
Music Composer A.R. Rahman felt doomsday had arrived. "It is doomsday because somebody has done such a big harm to humanity. It is disrespect to humanity. If you don't fix it now, it is shame for the nation," said the Oscar winner.
Former member of Parliament and actress Hema Malini, herself a mother of two, has advised girls to stop taking their security lightly.
"When my daughters go out of home and when they come late at night, I get very worried. I keep calling them all the time. I tell them to take our driver and don't go with any stranger. So my advice to all the children of this country, especially girls, don't take it so lightly and just walk out. Anything can happen with anybody."
The rape victim continues to battle for her life after an operation to remove her entire intestine, and doctors said Friday that she remains critical.

Hanging them to death, is SO not enough punishment but they should start their punishment of by cutting off what they used to Destroyed that poor young lady's life and every veins in their bodies should be cut little by little as well so that they also feels n know the pain they have cost her for life.

what a shame!!!!!!
Those filthy creatures should not be hanged to death
they should receive a punishment that
everyone should learn if you even think about raping this is what will happen to you
i pray for that girl who is battling between life and death
not just her but every girl's safety
@Shiiya - That's the problem with humanity! They have chosen to be quiet all these years. They have chosen to turn a blind eye, deaf ear and dumb voice over horrific incidents such as rape. It's about time they got up and raised their voice against this! I say there should be a universal petition to condemn these criminals to a torturous death. How could you question why this is made into a big deal :/ a girl got gang raped with an iron rod inserted into her private part! She was thrown onto a road and left to die! In fact the commotion isn't even BIG enough for my liking! This kind of case deserves so much awareness that every son of a bit*h who even THINKS about such a crime should piss in their pants out of fear.
No offense but majority of indian films do have rape scenes and about girls going through pain so you guys cant really talk if your gona show things like this, and yeah she got raped but why make it so big?! The girls probs traumatised right now she needs family support! There are millions of ppl who are getting raped... Never seen anyone raise a voice then #justsaying
I pray the girl survives and get well soon. Those men also should be tortured and hope they get caught. Those criminals have ruined that girls life.
If your going out then don't go alone or with one friend, go in groups and make sure that public members are around.

Hang them, electrocute them or hand them over to the public to be tortured and killed! Make rape punishable by death! SHAME ON DELHI..capital of HORRORS AND EVIL!
It is sad to note that such criminals are not punished severely and people forget about them very soon. Police are for the protection of politicians only. There are 20 police staff for 1 politician while for 346 people there is one policeman. Where is India heading to?
