Megastar Amitabh Bachchan will carry the Olympic torch Thursday, during the Olympic Torch Relay, organised ahead of the opening ceremony of the grand sporting extravaganza in London.
"The very prestigious Olympic Organizing Committee, headed by its chairman, Lord Sebastian Coe... sends an invitation to be a part of the Olympic Torch Relay tomorrow as the flame passes through London, on its final journey into the Stadium for the Opening Ceremony, London Olympics 2012," Amitabh wrote on his blog srbachchan.tumblr.com Wednesday night.
The 69-year-old veteran will cover a distance of 300 metres at Southwark in the Borough of London starting around 10:50 a.m, "a moment to be hopefully remembered by the grandchildren," he added.
Big B says he is honoured to have been bestowed with an opportunity to be part of what he calls "a moment of pride".
"This is an incredible honour, humbling and so full of pride and emotion. A moment that fills me with all that reflects the spirit of the Games - a certain respectability and dignity that it offers, to all people and communities of the world, to come and compete in their respective skills in an atmosphere free from discrimination," he wrote.
The opening ceremony is to be held Friday.

I agree with LoveRosh. The honor of bearing the torch is given to anyone who has a special story to share about their achievements or who is very inspirational to others. It has nothing to do with sports (although some of the torch bearers were athletes).

The olympic torch carrying has absolutly nothing to do with any relations with sports. ANYONE who has a story to tell who has something special whose stories were nominated by friends or families or even celebrities can carry the torch! I dislike Amitabhji i just dont like the bachchans period. BUT I am VERY VERY PROUD that he was chosen to represent India. He deserves it above many. And it has NOTHING to do with sports its about coming together as 1 WORLD and 1 PEOPLE OF 1 WORLD as a UNITED BEING, and to do that the people of the olympics chose different people from all OVER. Go to the olympics main page and check out torch bearers. Over 8000 people were chosen and including just everyday people with fascinating or interesting or special stories.
What are you SERIOUS!!!! Leaves me speachless to see movie actors getting such an honour over those who actually take part in the games.
Again - link to sports?

I can understand his overwhelmed response for being invited to carry the torch, but honestly I think a person affiliated with sports in Bollywood one way or another would have been better, but oh well you can't blame the guy for being happy.
Big up the London Olympics 2012!! Saw the torch in my area yesterday and it felt great - party on at Hyde Park tonight London!!!!
YYY not a sportman????...this is veryyy sad nothing against AB but not happyyy we got so many sportspersons who deserve it better...i guess it's moneyyy!!!!!!
I thought Olympics was about sports. Amitabh carrying the Olympic torch sounds very funny considering the guy has never been associated with sports. ROFL. Looks like everybody forgot Olympics is actually about sports and not about actors.
Oh well...its sad that movie celebrities have an edge over sports personalities...even in the mega sports event like Olympics! But hey...if Rupert Grint can bear the torch...so can AB! This invitation came from Olympic organizing committee n not the indian Olympic association..
Crap...how do I unlike my own comment without disliking it? :s

With utmost respect for AB. The authorities should have selected an sportsman with iconic stature to carry the torch.
An aged film star no matter how great he may be...has no business carrying the Olympics torch...its the domain of sportspersons who have sweated it out on the fields ...
alas our sports authorities dont have basic intelligence to understand this.
