Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was in trouble Wednesday after a South African businessman accused him of abusing and hitting him and his father-in-law at a five-star hotel here.
Police who failed to trace Saif at his Bandra house Wednesday afternoon later found him at his actress-girlfriend Kareena Kapoor's residence and escorted him to a police station, a police officer said.
Police said a case of assault had been registered against the Bollywood actor.
The victim, Iqbal Sharma, who is of Indian origin, told TimesNow television that Saif called him an "idiot" for complaining about the actor's loud conduct at a restaurant in the Taj Mahal Hotel.
Sharma said he and his family had requested the restaurant manager to ask Saif and his friends, which included Kareena, Amrita Arora and Malaika Arora Khan, to keep their voices down.
Sharma said he and his family decided to move to another part of the restaurant downstairs.
"As we were going down the stairs, Saif was coming up, probably from the toilet. As he passed me, he called me an idiot and asked 'do you know who I am?'"
Sharma said the actor first pushed him and then assaulted his father-in-law who fell on the stairs and bruised his jaw.
"It was an uncivilized way to behave in a public space," Sharma said, adding that he intended to pursue the matter legally.
A police officer confirmed that Sharma and his guests had objected to the noise created by Saif and his friends.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight Tuesday.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Iqbal Shaikh declined to say if the actor would be arrested.
Saif has been involved in public spats earlier too, including some photo journalists in Patiala in September 2008.
The actor has won the Padma Shri award, which did not go down well with the Bishnoi community in Rajasthan as he is accused of killing a blackbuck -- an animal the Bishnois hold sacred.

Disliking a comment only means one thing: THE TRUTH ALWAYS HURTS!!!
Theres always 2 sides to a story people... open your eyes and mind and try to see beyond what is told... its not that hard! But for once, OPEN YOUR EYES! Im not saying that theres no way Saif cant be wrong. Of course he can. But for all those who disliked my previous comment, i was talking in general terms. Theres more to what meets the eye... If you guys still dont understand, then yes, then clearly the mind needs to be exposed to the real world of truth and lies!

I know its imp to know the other side of story ,but then y is saif quite ,may be becoz he is at fault.he should have come up with an explanation, wasnt there any person to witness this?
I still dont understand on what ground he got Padmashree???
Its quite easy to exploit someone on national television and the only side which people hear is the side of the "victim", not the accused. No matter how famous, well actually it does matter. The media loves to get their dirty little hands on big stars without even going further into the detail of the story. In the entire article, all I read was Sharma this and Sharma that... where in the world is "Saif explained... Saif said..."??? Obviously that won't exist now would it? It wouldn't be much of a story to be posted front page in the news, if it had a logical explanation from the accused side.
So I kindly request, all hypocrites... I apologize for saying that, but I am speaking in general terms and not pointing fingers at anyone, but Please, before making a decision from what is seen, read, and heard, think about what the other side of the story is. There's always 2 sides to any story: What the story is ASSUMED to be and what the story REALLY IS!
I sincerely apologize if I have offended anyone, because that had not been my motive in any manner. Do understand what I tried to explain!
You know I don;t care about this story. But I do care about the fact that when a court of law (which by the way listens to both sides of the story) had fined Saif and his late father for hunting and killing bucks, and the govt then giving him an award of civilian honour, I first lost respect for the actor for doing what he did and then lost hope in the Govt. So this Saif chap can go to hell which he will for killing innocent animals
